Blackout Drunks and Steve Urkel

I took myself verrry seriously when I was drinking. I was like the defensive dictator of a failing regime, unable to see myself through the lens of satire. But the best part about openly acknowledging your weaknesses is that other people can’t attack you with them! So now I laugh at myself and surround myself with people who do the same and freedom is the law of the land.

I got to see John Mulaney perform live recently, which was delightful. He didn’t talk about sobriety this show but has several hilarious bits about his former life as a blackout drinker. There’s the one above and my favorite, “Why I Don’t Drink Anymore,” which is for some reason no longer on YouTube but can be seen here: “And I had that thought, that only blackout drunks and Steve Urkel can have…”

  1. He’s a funny guy and he’s got a clever way of being very direct about his blackout drinking so you take it as a given but don’t judge him on it because he is so matter-of-fact about it. I haven’t really looked at comedians who do “sober comedy” – and it is such a rich source of material no doubt – so thanks for the lead.

    • I know, isn’t he great? I strive to talk about my past drinking with similar matter-of-factness. 🙂 I actually went to another comedy show recently, and almost all the comedians there were sober and making jokes about it, too. I was invited by someone from the rooms, so that probably had something to do with it, but I agree there’s a natural relationship between comedy and recovery. They’re both about acknowledging vulnerability, right?

  2. John Mulaney is hilarious. I love his Law & Order bits. I too heard that tape of his where he talks about the drinking, etc. and made me wonder how bad he got before he pulled the brakes on it. Sounds like he got it before it got really bad.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. His line about how people will have no idea what to offer you at a party when you don’t drink…solid gold. “An old turnip? My girlfriend’s NuvaRing…?”
    Gets me every time.
